The inauguration of a newly elected American president is a major event in American politics. For generations, the inauguration ceremony of the president-elect has always consisted of the latter taking the oath of office before a Supreme Court Justice, considered the judicial guarantor of the Constitution and therefore of American justice.
Moreover, the tradition of the constitutional oath-taking ceremony has always shown the president-elect placing his left hand on the Bible, which a family member, most often his wife, holds firmly with both hands out of respect, while the right hand is raised as a sign of acceptance and a guarantee of respect for the Constitution.
